What’s your mom style? My recent assignment for Hallmark Channel’s “Home & Family”: Glam-up, trend-up and one-up the mom-uniform. Actually, it wasn’t assigned… I kinda came up with it and pitched it with hopes producers would like it. I mean, this blog is called ‘The Fab Mom’ and all, but please… I am human… I like to hang out in my pajamas just as long as any other mom does on my stay-at-home days. I needed to help myself, people. My go-to mom-uniform? Slouchy-pants, stretch pants or workout pants. (How else am I supposed to play on the floor properly?)
Luckily, I love Target. (I DO. I know most of you do too.) And it was a real, non-TV related shopping trip at Target that truly inspired my segment pitch for taking the mom-uniform up a notch for “Home & Family” viewers. Between Target’s Converse, Xhilaration and Mossimo brands… I found OPTIONS for the most basic mom-uniforms! Just as comfy (truly) but much more trendy and stylish (fabulous).
Next step? Finding the real-fab-moms to model for me on TV. (NOTE: If you ever need a favor, ask a mom. A mom will help you. A mom will support you. A mom will save your a$$ and make your bosses very, very happy.) My go-to real-fab-moms for this recent segment was mom-of-3 Lindsay (the very talented most sweetest mastermind behind the hit national play Expressing Motherhood) and mom-of-2 Anne (the oh-so-chic knockout of ChicMamaLA).
Granted, each of these women already had amazing style… but the three of us shared the same dilemma: our go-to, at-home wardrobe revolved around workout gear. Even though we know better, enough with our yoga pants already.
So for Lindsay, we went all-out and decked her in an actual dress (remember those?). We then slapped that dress ($30) with some on-trend printed leggings ($16, elastic waist, stretchy, comfy… and yes, technically you can workout in them if ya wanted)… that trendy shirt-dress quickly became a frilly and easygoing shirt that is as versatile as any mom’s daily activities.
For Anne, we went edgy/hip/Hollywood mama and clothed her in Mossimo from head to toe, found exclusively at Target. (Hey, the chic chick is a working actress… so I had no choice but to go Hollywood.) Dressing in one color is always chic, but dressing in all black takes it to another hotness level. The $20 tunic is cotton (like a basic sweatshirt), but the entire back is SHEER for a really sexy look.
Stretch pants with an on-trend tuxedo stripe hide the fact that… well… the pants are still basic stretch pants (that, yes, you can workout in if you just have to, $20). Topped off with a $30 moto vest and you never even realize that you can comfortably run around the park in this getup.
The best part? All outfits rang up well under $100 each (including Lindsay’s fabulous glamour sunglasses and Anne’s blinged-out baseball cap… which you’ll spot on the actual segment).
As for my own uniform trend-up? Well… watch the segment. (HINT: I was the ‘sporty-spice’ of the group.) The moral of this: There’s no shame in being comfortable with your kids, but keep an eye out for not-so-obvious options to keep you looking and feeling fab. Happy Dressing Mamas!

Hi Jill,
I had so much fun doing this.
I’ve been trying to dress a bit more together the last few years as my youngest just turned 2.
Makes me feel a lot better and truly not that hard to do.
I like the outfit you picked out for me.
Thanks for a fabulous afternoon!
Lindsay
