Yes, I’m counting the days until Mother’s Day. Not for the possible mimosas, not for the intended appreciation from people I love the most and not for the sure-to-be-adorable hand-drawn cards I’m hopefully gonna get again. All those fabulous things are, thankfully, usually givens… along with our usual (and many!) coordinating mommy and me outfits. It’s part of the whole motherhood gig…
The real reason I’m counting down Mother’s Day? For the mini-break I’ll get.
A few years ago, I wrote about some things I wanted for the most grand holiday — ok, one thing I REALLY wanted. My request was unconventional, unexpected and maybe semi-inappropriate to some traditional folks. But yes, I just wanted what I wanted just for a little bit, before the family love fest of mimosas, hand-drawn cards and matching outfits. Chalk up my wish list back then to being overworked, emotionally overextended and seriously overdue for some basic self care. Because moms work hard.
C’mon, you know it’s true and you feel the same way too. Modern motherhood can get complicated and feel a bit conflicting for many moms across the universe… at least it can be for me. I want to be with my kids. I want to be alone. I want a loud family party scenario. I want to be completely quiet and by myself, interrupted.
Whether we’re stay-at-home, work-at-home, work-away-from-home or a crazy combo of everything (which is me)… a mom is a mom is a mom. I mean, sometimes I just want to throw my shoes on the bathroom floor in the middle of everything and not ever feel obligated to ever pick them up… EVER.
But, I always end up picking up the shoes and putting them away. My shoes, my kids’ shoes, my husband’s shoes. All shoes. If we had a dog I’d probably pick up his shoes too. (Thank God we don’t yet have a dog.) Because I’m the mom and it’s what we do, whether we like or not.
Which is why I guess I wished for that semi-controversial Mother’s Day moment of having some alone time just a few years ago.
(Those are some good shoes, right?)
The flip side of it all? We’re in charge of everything. And, I like being in charge — even if I do feel overextended for being in charge of everything. (I always say: There’s big power in being in charge… even if it’s confined to the inside of your home.) And being in charge of what everyone wears, and having the power to dress your mini-people like they’re your faithful matching minions makes me giggle. Especially for Mother’s Day.
