Freak. After. Babies. (Aha. Strike of the F-A-B again…)
You might freak over these Halloween tablescapes.
I’m kinda into the boo-factor this year. I bought the candy way ahead of time. My girls and I got costumes figured out weeks ago (we’ve got a black cat and a white bunny happening here, folks… that is, assuming I can find LilMiss’ bunny ears stashed somewhere in her toy bins). I blame my unexpected spook-tacular attitude on my recent Halloween party segment on NBC’s “Today Show” with Kathie Lee Gifford & Hoda Kotb.
I almost *died* when I finally saw how it all came together… riiiiight?!?! (So cute! Keep in mind I hauled all the decor items in my big fat suitcase across the country to get these goods to NYC. Except that famous great pumpkin, of course.) I know, I know. It looks like a LOT. But I promise it wasn’t all that dramatic. Our theme? Trick-or-Treat… which meant an inexpensive, black ‘spooky’ cobweb-lookin’ table runner (from a novelty store, about $10 total), lots of plastic spiders, mice and bugs (from that same novelty store) and LOTS of candy anywhere we could stash it (we took full advantage of the color pop of Skittles).
You saw Skittles in the candle displays — because they don’t melt when you burn the candle!
And don’t forget about that fabulous ‘Taste the Rainbow’ cake that my daughters have been obsessed with for a while now (hello, what kid wouldn’t be obsessed with a dessert that looks like a humongous pile of CANDY on the table). This is THE item that will fill major space on your table, be the showstopper & conversation starter and serve a ton of guests.
I mean, this cake is crazy-complicated to make…. KIDDING. It’s SO EASY. Embarrassingly easy. Here’s what you do: 1) Get or make a regular round layer cake (any flavor), 2) Stick Twix bars around the sides using frosting, 3) Dump as many Skittles as you possibly can on top of the cake. DONE.
Another easy DIY? Grab yourself some Nutter Butter cookies, dunk ’em in melted white chocolate and then stick chocolate chips on for eyes and red Skittles on for mouths. Boo!
So now you know. This site may say ‘fabulous’ but the perk is that everything’s also pretty frugal, most of the time. Because moms need cheap and easy. And half store-bought. You may freak now… in a good way.
What does my own dining room table look like at home? This:
Yes, I’ve put my wedding silver and crystal candlesticks into action. With some plastic skulls. And some fake mice. I know, I know… it’s not too late to add that cake. (Have no fear… I WILL!)
