A fabulous FYI from The Fab Mom: I cared for my skin from the inside out with Aveeno® Active Naturals as part of a sponsored post for Socialstars #Aveeno. All winter skin stories are mine, all opinions are authentically my own.
Hollywood Awards Season is HERE! Golden Globes: DONE. Next up, Critics Choice Awards (I think… if my entertainment reporter background doesn’t fail me…) Did ya’ll see Rosamund Pike strut her stuff on the Golden Globes red carpet? Yeah. She JUST had a baby a few weeks ago. BAM. (Ok, I may’ve thought the dress was a little too-cut-up and low-hanging on the ‘globes’ – if ya know what I mean – but in spite of that, I’m always happy to boost a brand new mom into the fabulous spotlight just for showing up, putting on a smile and feeling confident in her own skin. Low-cut ‘globes’ and all.) So – again – BAM. New mom that, why dontcha. (You know she’s probably following some exclusive holistic skin health regimen…) Nevermind winter: Skin is still in.
I can’t help but flash back to the kickoff of Awards Season – Golden Globes weekend, actually – five years ago: I found out I was unexpectedly pregnant for the first time with my precious LadyP and immediately (and, stupidly) started lamenting the beginning of the end right there in my small bathroom just before hitting my couch to watch the red carpet shows. (2010 was the first year in several years I hadn’t been working on site at these shows.) Being freshly preggers, I cried for the inevitable end of being fabulous (or, being so delusional to think that I was so fabulous in the first place just because I worked as an entertainment reporter and chatted with celebrities day in and day out during awards season). I also cried for the inevitable 9-month hiatus of wine. (Ridiculous. Immature. Again, this was 2010.)
So.. cut to present day: As a mom of two little ones (how’d that happen again!??) I now watch red carpet coverage from the outside-in (on my couch, usually)… and am freakishly convinced that Hollywood has PURPOSEFULLY PLACED Awards Season right after the holidays, just ahead of spring, to kick us moms who’ve gotten lazy over the last few months into gear. I don’t consider it a you-must-look-pretty-like-Hollywood-pressure thing… I actually consider it a motivating thing. Stars are people too you know… if celebrity moms can look fabulous with kids, so can we. (No, I’m not drunk as I write this. I honestly believe that.) Call this a freakish fascination of mine. How do they get that glow? Why does their skin look so great when it’s frickin’ winter? Do they really have that much energy or are they just faking it so TMZ doesn’t rip them apart for falling apart after having kids?
Awards Season motivates me to get back on track self-care wise. No, we don’t have to dish out thousands and thousands of bucks to resemble a glimpse of what celebrity moms have goin’ on. We’re regular moms. It’s all good. We need to save our regular-people money to pay for things like food, housing and future college educations… right?!?! (And wine too. Ha.) But in the name of hopping on the Hollywood-inspired ‘Skin Is In’ filosophy (yes, filosophy starts with an ‘F’ because we are here on TheFabMom)… I’ve sharing a few of my daily tricks to break some bad beauty habits. With just a few itty-bitty daily efforts, I’m convinced that my winter skin is going to glow under my layered clothing. And when I feel like my skin is finally glowing under all my layered clothing, I intend on pretending that I’m some kind of celebrity mom in my own home… (if you spot me wearing an evening gown while pouring cereal for breakfast, pay no mind). Here’s my challenge for all of us during awards season:
1) DRINK MORE… WATER. (What, you thought I was going to say wine?) At the very least, here’s what I’ve started doing: A full glass when I wake up, a full glass with my lunch, a full glass before bed. I’ve also started finishing my girls’ half-full sippy cups in an effort to increase my intake. (Pathetic? Gross? Brilliant? Hmm.) I know that’s nearly not enough of what we’re supposed to drink to get glowing celebrity skin, but it’s a start. And it’s more than I was drinking back in December.
2) EAT FRUIT. (Duh.) In spite of this most obvious tip, I’ve been tracking how much fruit I’ve been eating on a daily basis and… well… my results are NOT good. One day I tallied 1/2 a banana and a tangerine for the whole day. THE. WHOLE. DAY. Another day I recorded 3 strawberries. 3. Like: 1, 2, 3. And that was it. My toddlers eat more fruit than me (which is good parenting, I guess, but maybe I’d have more energy from the inside-out if I tried having a bowl of berries or something…) My recent experiment is to rinse the fruit and then put it in the fridge after I bring it home from the grocery store (like all those health-experts suggest). I’m also trying to keep more fruit accessible on my countertop (as opposed to being outta sight, outta mind). So far, I’m feeling better and (seemingly) have more color in my face. Go figure.
3) MOISTURIZE DAILY. Celebrity moms may get facials before hitting the red carpet, but yeah, that’s not gonna happen for me anytime soon. (“You spent how much to get a facial?!?!” I can hear my husband now.) Back in college, I used to moisturize a few times a day… particularly because my roommate at the time would tell me stories about how her grandmother insisted that she moisturize constantly to prevent wrinkles. Now, not so much. As moms, none of us have time to do anything… right? WRONG. We can use what I like to call ‘in-between time’ — you know, that time in your kitchen when you’re cleaning up dirty dishes and also watching your kids chew and swallow their goldfish crackers to make sure they don’t choke — that’s ‘in-between time!’ Use that time to get some natural moisturizer on your hands… and maybe your arms… and if you’re not wearing any makeup yet, your face. Aveeno® Daily Moisturizing Lotion is working for me lately. (Yes, that’s the baby-care version behind it.) Formulated with ACTIVE NATURALS® Colloidal Oatmeal and rich emollients, it helps prevent and protect dry skin for a full 24 hours (which is fabulous, because I only have so much ‘in-between time’ to do my celebrity-inspired new beauty routine… and, colloidal oatmeal, by the way, can help restore skin’s normal pH and is the #1 ingredient most trusted and recommended by dermatologists). I keep this healthy beauty-maker in my kitchen… no lie (easy access). That gives me more time to build Legos…
4) SLEEP MORE. Again, I know you’re laughing or scoffing or thinking WTF this chick is delusional. I’m not. Once a week, I [try to] make it a habit to put myself to bed – to sleep – right after putting my girls to bed. Like, I put them to bed at 8pm… and then I go to bed around 8:30. Truth. I’ve written about this before. Sleep has been scientifically proven to restore our skin cells from the inside-out. You know it.
So how do you like that, Rosamund Pike? This mom’s gonna challenge you to a skin-off (or something like that). Now I just have to figure out how to get myself back on the Awards Season circuit… somewhere… somehow… Cheers to making the effort to better winter skin health… whether we end up on a red carpet or not!
