Kate Middleton. Kim Kardashian. Jessica Simpson. We contrast and compare… BUT WHY DO WE CARE?
I recently chatted about ‘Kim vs Kate’ pregancies (both women due in July) on HLN’s “Showbiz Tonight,” and on my drive home from the CNN studios I really started thinking about this. WHY do we care so much about celebrity baby bumps? Sure, I’m an Entertainment Journalist AND new mom, but does everyone else who’s an entertainment fan pay attention to this baby-bump stuff too?
I’ll admit: I CARE. I COMPARE. I MIGHT BE OBSESSED. I wasn’t before I became a mom, but I am now.
Celebrity baby bumps are BIG business these days. Think about it: Ten – or even five – years ago, did you ever see so many celebrity-mom stories in the news? Yeah. Take a look at any supermarket magazine stand and virtually each one of them has something to do with celebrities becoming a mom, losing weight after having a baby, trying to have a baby… or even moms of celebrities fessing up their biggest regrets (anyone seen that Kris Jenner cover lately?).
Are we obsessed with celebrity moms because pregnancy and motherhood are the grand equalizers among everyday women? Does becoming a mom – and dealing with the everyday challenges of it – make celebrities more human for the rest of us? Hmmmmm…..
Even for those who don’t like to admit it — WE ARE INTERESTED. At least, the cover of magazines – and their sales numbers – seem to suggest so. And so do my comments in the HLN clip below — WATCH:
