For some women, “to epi or not” is the question.
For me, there’s no question: HELL YES. When the time comes, I’d like an epidural please (or, a vodka/soda, mojito or a nice chilled shot of Petrone). But, I am no birthing expert. I’m just a naive, petrified pregnant chick who’d like to get her baby into the outside world as painlessly as possible.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve been shocked how many people have asked me IF I plan on getting an epidural. I’ve never considered otherwise. Yet, several women have told me their triumphant tales about how they suffered and powered through to reap the “benefits” of giving birth naturally (without drugs). More power to you, ladies. I respect their bravery, but I also can’t help but make fun of them a little bit in my head. Why do some women feel as though they have something to prove?
Modern science has developed safe ways for us women to feel comfortable and more empowered by enabling us to accomplish the largest miracle this life has to offer without experiencing brutal pain. I don’t know about you, but that feat in itself makes me feel pretty damn powerful! If I need an ego boost, I’ll write a book, run a marathon, or find something else to do that’s amazing. Maybe I feel this way because I’m married to a doctor? (Nah.)
I’m sure those tough mamas out there are hating me right now. (I hope not.) Maybe I’m envious of your sense of adventure? Or, as a woman who likes to champion other women, maybe I just don’t like hearing about you being in pain. Us girls have to deal with plenty of bull$#%! in our lives… why put ourselves through such things if we don’t have to?
Then again, some women don’t get to the hospital in time to actually get the epidural/drugs before their labor progresses… Here’s hoping this blog doesn’t bite me in the butt!
