My toddler safety tips are based on the following philosophy: I just don’t mess around with toddlers. Never have, never will. They’re too tricky… unpredictable… sneaky and suspicious (in the most adorable way, of course). Call me overprotective, call me a freak, call me annoying. We are all entitled to find our own ways of doing things as parents when it comes to wrangling children in busy places… but I’ll just say, after several trips to Disneyland when my girls were toddlers in their prime, no toddler ever got lost.
Why? Not because I was especially alert. Not because I am the perfect supermom there is. Not because I have some kind of wicked sense of truly controlling my own children. Oh no. I tied ’em up.
It was the only way… particularly because I know that I’m not exempt from any other parent when it comes to random stuff happening that involves a tot curiously wandering off. Both my girls were curious (still are) and both would’ve ditched me at the Happiest Place on Earth if given 1.5 seconds to do it. TODDLER LEASHES WORK. No need to be embarrassed, no need to feel inadequate for using them. And, dare I say, leashes can be fun. My girls loved pretending to be puppies (with their $15 backpack harnesses that looked like puppies). I also loved being able to walk them around (ie: not having to push a stroller) and knowing where they were at all times.
So yes, my latest ‘FAB Mom on 2’ on CBS Los Angeles was all about… tying up toddlers in the name of public safety (yes, thanks to that awful incident we’ll all refer to as GorillaGate from here on out). This segment wasn’t about judging, blaming, making light of a most terrifying and horrible incident. It was about becoming more vigilant as parents — to keep all kids safer from here on out. Even if toddlers continue to move as quickly as they’ve proved they do… WATCH.
And then, if you want some more nitty-gritty details and tips, read more on CBSLA on here. How do you keep track of toddlers?
